The Gathering Room: Mending Your Energy Shields
Did you know that we’re energetically connected?
We all have the ability to feel each other’s energy: if someone is happy and calm, we can feel it, and when someone is angry or dangerous, we can feel that as well. What’s more, we’re each projecting our own energy all the time.
However, when you’re not aware of the energy you’re giving off, you inadvertently create what Martha calls “energetic dark spots”-and these make you vulnerable to people with negative energy who want to prey on you in some way.
In this episode of The Gathering Room, Martha talks about how you can mend any energetic dark spots you may have and create an integrous energy that is calm, pure, and doesn't attract negativity...

Bewildered: Change the Shape of Culture
Просмотров 8309 часов назад
On their Bewildered podcast, Martha and Ro explore the many ways that the culture pulls us away from our true nature. However-as they want to make absolutely clear in this episode-the culture is not the boss of us! As Martha and Ro point out, we have a hand in creating the culture, and it can be thrilling to look at the power we have when we put ourselves into the cultural equation. To learn ho...

Waves of shame. They're icky, they're toxic, and they're not easy to escape. In this episode of The Gathering Room, Martha is talking about how we can move past this particularly intense form of anxiety and swim on to better horizons. Shame attacks us at the level of basic self-identity and makes us believe that our vulnerabilities are permanent, personal, and pervasive. It also wants us to kee...

Many of us have heard about the mind-body connection, but have you ever tried sense-memory therapy? Martha recently lost her sense of smell to a sinus infection, and instead of worrying that she'll never get it back, she's trying sense-memory therapy-she holds her favorite pine-scented candle close to her nose while relishing the memory of smelling that candle. Recalling positive sense memories...
Bewildered: Beware Fake Urgency
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.14 дней назад
"Quick! Do this now! It's urgent!" Our culture constantly pressures us to do things that serve the system, and we’re trained to think of these things as urgent. But are they really? In this BeWild Files episode of Bewildered, Martha and Ro dive into the topic of urgency-how there’s a type that will crush your soul and a type that will grow your soul, and how you can tell the difference. If you ...
The Gathering Room: Your Genius is Calling
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.Месяц назад
Did you know you were born a creative genius? All of us are, Martha says, but we are socialized out of our genius by the structures of culture. Why? Because the culture wants everyone the same, but genius doesn’t homogenize well. However, your genius is still calling to you, and in this episode of The Gathering Room, Martha shares how you can recognize-and follow-its call. She says your genius ...

Do you ever feel like you’re trying to fit even more stuff into a life that’s already full? In this episode of Bewildered, Martha and Ro are talking about our culture's obsession with more, more, more, and how it's making us overwhelmed, exhausted, and burnt out. Their solution? Empty space! Our culture doesn't train us to appreciate empty spaces, but emptiness is what gives things value. To he...

The world can be a hard, inhospitable, downright hostile place, and people can quite often be less than kind. Martha defines kindness in motion as “kindness while doing things” and she’s sharing how to do it in this episode of The Gathering Room. As Martha describes ...

Most of us are socialized to believe that if we suffer enough, we’ll be rewarded later-and the reward for our suffering will be happiness. In other words, happiness is something we must earn through suffering. In this episode of Bewildered, Martha and Ro challenge this cultural belief, inspired by the words of 14th century mystic St. Catherine of Siena who said, “All the way to heaven is heaven...

I love the reminder that we change the culture and therefore the world through living a life in integrity, questioning the sometimes weird cultural norms. I don't have to convert anybody through talking about what could be better. I just have to "be the change that I want to see in the world", as Gandhi pointed out as well. Thanks a lot for the funny and eloquent episode!

I had a pantry moth invasion for a while. They do not eat wool. Cleaning thoroughly may be the best plan. And throwing out all plant matter that is open in your home. As far as wool, if you wash it or dry clean wool at the end of the winter, you should be okay. The adult moths don't eat the wool; they lay their eggs on food spots on the wool and the larvae eat the food on the wool. I love your podcast!!!

I think they are trying to talk about this without telling so much personal stuff with an example, which is helpful to me. I used to try to change culture through whom I saw as powerful "Karen", mom, set to the grave wife. Because she was allowed to talk, fed everyone or not and was the acceptable woman form. I am not gay but wow is the rural midwest a difficult place if your capable of learning.

Oh gosh - I think I stumbled upon your idea recently in my own life. I used to be so active as a kid. I was always either playing sports or looking for some fun activity to do. And as I got into my 20s I found great joy in doing handyman type of tasks. Not for money but just around the house but I haven't done that stuff in decades. Now I'm in my late 50s and found an amazing amount of joy in doing these things again and I'm reminded constantly of how much fun and satisfaction I used to get out of doing manual, physical things. SO I've been trimming trees, fixing my mom's sprinkler system, changing the oil in mine and my mom's car, I got my motorcycle running again after it sat there for 8 years (and I've never worked on motorcycles before) and I pressure washed my entire driveway and so many more things. I'm kind of stunned at how much I've done! The more of this physical labor I do, the more I enjoy it and I may have stumbled upon my next paying "gig".....home services. However my mind says "Dude at 57 you're far too old to start a physical labor job. You need to stick to your education in IT and accounting and get, yet another, office gig and leave this physical work to the younger men." BUT my body is responding really well to this physical labor so I'm starting to think there might be a way where I can do it. But I'm still worried about my body not holding up as I age. When I'm tired and I really don't want to do a particular job, I just remind myself of how good it felt in the past when I've taken on something I used to dread and completed it. Or how good it felt in the past to work hard, to the point of soaking my entire shirt in sweat, and then drinking a cold glass of water or gatoraide. Anyways - thanks for this!! I really like it when videos remind me of just how powerful our thoughts actually are.

thank you Martha. This really helped. I was just in the middle of a wave of shame when I watched this because I think I have just lost a friendship. I tried to have an honest, open, transparent repair conversation with a friend and now she is not responding to my email and I feel so bad. also, to the person who doesn't have a good relationship with her parents. I have chosen to become estranged from both my parents and my sisters too. I don't feel ashamed about this because it has been so liberating, but I just want you to know that you are not alone.

So much great stuff to unpack here! I'm going to try this myself this week. (I'm also going to reread my well-worn copy of Steering by Starlight.) Thank you for acknowledging all the craziness in the world right now and talking about finding good times in spite of that, not denying it through toxic positivity. Likewise, I appreciate you speaking about how creating a better mental framework around money produces actions that bring in more money -- you're not just "manifesting" better finances out of thin air through pure thought. I was diagnosed with ADHD the week I turned 60. I have found that caffeine at certain times of the day and in certain states of feeling overwhelmed acts as an analog to Ritalin and makes me tired, not wired, because my brain finally gets some dopamine and calms down. I actually take Ritalin to sleep sometimes. I could see your post-coffee airplane experience happening to me too. The science of scent is fascinating! I think you would enjoy reading Chandler Burr's book The Emperor of Scent about a new (controversial) theory of how scent works with the brain (less about old lock-and-key mechanisms and more about vibration and how the brain functions as a sort of spectroscope to identify smells -- a quantum theory that really angered traditional olfaction scientists. Hope you get your smell back soon!!!
